Colombian singer-songwriter Ela Taubert is destined for stardom – there’s no doubt about it. More than just a new “It Girl” in Latin pop, Ela has turned her art into a safe space for listeners to explore the stories, conflicts and raw feelings involved with the matters of the heart. In her first project, ‘¿Quién Dijo Que Era Fácil?,’ the composer hits the mark with gut-wrenching descriptions of heartbreak and the whirlwind of vulnerability of adolescence. How could rock ever be played out with a band like The Warning at the helm of the genre? It’s not just that the sister trio from Monterrey, Mexico bring fresh perspective to the white, male-dominated landscape. It’s also the fact that, since screaming into nominative existence with 2017’s ‘XXI Century Blood’ and ‘Queen of the Murder Scene’ the following year, evolution and authenticity has been at the crux of their craft. For starters, Daniela, Paulina, and Alejandra Villarreal are total players. Check the bass riff that kicks off “Dust to Dust” for instance. It’d make Steve Harris blush. 2022 album ‘ERROR’ traded turnt-up arrangements for more subtle guitar styles, clearing out room for Daniela to really shout from the chest. Once you watch these live takes of “Hell You Call A Dream” and “Automatic Sun,” it’ll come as no surprise that Muse, Guns N’ Roses, and Foo Fighters have invited las hermanas for opener slots. En su segundo álbum, Residente está teniendo un momento existencial. Su segundo álbum ‘Las Letras Ya No Importan’ es un registro de los pasados siete años en la vida del rapero. Una colección de 20 canciones en las que hace inventario de su carrera, cuestiona su relevancia en la cultura popular y denuncia los males que aquejan al mundo: las guerras, la hambruna, la pobreza y la corrupción. Aunque, como es de costumbre con Residente desde sus días en Calle 13, también se goza. El disco está lleno de experimentos sónicos. Su flow, tan rápido como una metralleta, flota entre arreglos sinfónicos, percusión en staccato y samples del hip hop de la vieja escuela. Con invitados estelares como Rauw Alejandro, Christian Nodal, Busta Rhymes y la palestina Amal Markus, ‘Las Letras Ya No Importan’ es un trabajo con mucho corazón y mucho coraje. En su paso por la tarima de ctrl, el boricua rompió con toda la fuerza de un huracán. Su presentación de “El Malestar en la Cultura” es digna de estudiar; un reto lírico que Residente lanza hacia las partes más vácuas de la cultura del rap latino y que cae como un martillo de demolición. En contraste, “Ron en el Piso” es una daga directo al corazón; una elegía a su primo Julián que se convierte en un tipo de despedida a su propia juventud. Parado firmemente en el escenario, Residente nos deja claros que la transformación es un deber y no una opción.

On his second solo album, Residente is having an existential moment. ‘Las Letras Ya No Importan’ is a diary of the past seven years in the rapper’s life - a collection of 20 songs where he takes stock of his achievements, questions his relevance in popular culture and denounces the evils that plague our world: wars, corruption, poverty, famine. But, as is customary since his Calle 13 days, he’s having a blast living life. The album is full of sonic experiments. His flow, quick as a machine gun, floats between symphonic arrangements, staccato beats and old school hip hop samples. With Rauw Alejandro, Christian Nodal, Busta Rhymes and Palestinian singer Amal Markus as guests, ‘Las Letras Ya No Importan’ is a project full of courage and a lot of heart. During a triumphant lap around the ctrl stage, the boricua rapper tore the house down with hurricane force. His performance of “El Malestar en la Cultura” is a master class – a lyrical challenge thrown at the most vacuous parts of Latin rap that lands like a wrecking ball to the establishment. “Ron en el Piso” is a different vibe; an elegy for his cousin Julián that turns into a farewell party for his youth. Standing defiant on stage, Residente leaves one thing clear: transformation is a duty, not an option.

It arrives July 28, and the singer has told fans that it’s “some of the most challenging and rewarding music for me, a least – trying to really push myself and really do some cool stuff.” To celebrate the arrival of his fifth full album, we united with Mr. Malone in SoCal last month. The results are stellar, with Post being deeply candid and deeply expressive for the cameras. Geographically and emotionally, he does it all in these three performances - strumming a guitar poolside in “Green Thumb,” anguishing on the couch in “Overdrive,” and balancing on the roof in “Something Real.” Here’s to Post, here’s to Austin.
