The EC and the Channel Tunnel notwithstanding, the twenty-first century finds France and Britain still viewing each other suspiciously across the same twenty-five mile ditch, their centuries-old legacy of political rivalry and mutual opprobrium more or less intact. It does not help that the English insist on addressing their Gallic neighbours in GCSE French – a language unknown in France – and that the French themselves remain doggedly monoglot. However, one curious side-effect of this long-standing trans-Channel information gap is that each side secretly suspects the other of having a superior grasp of the universe, indeed of probably having a better time generally.
Does this mean that much of the mystique surrounding the great French vocalists and French chansons – merely their word for ‘songs’ after all – is the result of wilful Anglo-Saxon self-delusion? The probable answer is yes, given that most of our parents and grandparents would have had few clues as to whether Edith Piaf (known as the Little Sparrow), Jean Sablon and Charles Trenet were singing about a lost love or a light lunch. However, this in itself is a sort of tribute to a generation of French singers whose talents were compelling enough to bridge the linguistic divide between them and their foreign audience.

Limitless imagination is a defining characteristic of great musicians - J Balvin proves that. The Colombian superstar’s passion for creativity explodes past mere music-making, and heads into the realms of visual aesthetics, fashion and pop culture. In the last decade, the Medellin native has helped turn his city, and Latin America in general, into the coolest place to be in pop music. Taking inspiration from ‘Colores,’ the teams worked with Rio-based Penique Productions to turn the interior of a mansion into a vibrant representation of each song’s hue. Next up: “Negro.” Perhaps the sleekest lookin’ of all the performances, this one feels almost sci-fi. Dancehall culture is as much about personality as it is about musical talent, and Shenseea has both in spades. The Jamaica native can certainly hit the notes, but she’s just as impressive leading crowds with toasts, boasts and more than a little brashness. Maxed-out confidence is right there in the name of last year’s debut: ‘ALPHA,’ an album throughout which the “Diana” singer puts her own desires first. “I’m the one you want/I’m the one you need,” she proclaims on the Tyga-assisted album opener “Target.” Two tracks later she’s going full sexual self-empowerment on “Deserve It,” a pop-leaning bop with a breathy hook a la TLC and Destiny’s Child. That features include both Caribbean staples such as Beanie Man and Sean Paul alongside hip-hop luminaries 21 Savage and Megan Thee Stallion tells you she’s aiming for full crossover cred. “Waistline” and “Hit & Run” certainly do the job, and the only thing these two exclusive performances are missing is a sweaty crowd dancing alongside her. Advice: Do some toe touches before heeding Shen’s commands.

Any retrospective on ’00s R&B is incomplete without Ne-Yo. Born Shaffer Chimere Smith, the esteemed singer made a huge splash with his 2006 debut ‘In My Own Words.’ The project arrived at a moment when R&B and pop were one in the same, as the latter had adopted the former’s polished production and electronic instrumentation. A few weeks after ‘IMOW’ dropped, “So Sick” topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Like much of Ne-Yo's work, the track’s Scandinavian engineering was sleek enough for mainstream radio, sexy enough for the adults, and PG enough for DJs to play as the lone slow song at middle school dances. If it felt similar to Mario’s undeniable 2004 jam “Let Me Love You,” it's because Ne-Yo also wrote that gem. Yep, his pen game was as strong as his voice was cool; that’s why Jay-Z ushered him onto the Def Jam team. Accolades and hits were repeated over the next few years. 2008’s ‘Year of the Gentleman’ got an Album of the Year GRAMMY nod. At the ensuing award’s ceremony, the snazzy single “Miss Independent” earned Ne-Yo a gold record player for Best R&B song. When the musical landscape changed, his ability to blend R&B with pop, soul, and dance elements kept his sound fresh and relevant. It’s hard to forget the ubiquity of “Time of Our Lives” and “Give Me Everything,” his EDM collars with Pitbull. But crooning and grooving has always been Ne-Yo’s main bag. That’s where he is with this confessional “2 Million Secrets” performance. The taut band, the signature hat, the stare into the camera. Dude’s a legend, and he knows it.
